Carol graduated in Biochemistry from University College London in 1986 and then worked as a Biochemist at Southmead Hospital until 1991 where she did research on metabolic disease and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.  She has returned to diagnostic laboratory work after a long career break in Portugal and Brazil.
